About this GST calculator

This GST calculator helps New Zealand business owners, sole traders and bookkeepers work out GST on any amount without reaching for a spreadsheet. Switch between adding GST to a GST-exclusive figure, removing GST from a GST-inclusive figure, or pulling out just the GST amount for a quick check mid-invoice. Every result updates live as you type, so there is nothing to submit and nothing to wait for.

By default this NZ GST calculator uses the standard 15% rate. If you work in accommodation, there is a separate option for the 9% rate that applies to hotels, motels and serviced apartments once a guest's stay passes 28 days: tick the box and the calculator switches its formula automatically.

This tool is meant for quick reference, not as a substitute for advice. If your GST position is more complex, or you are not sure which rate or treatment applies, get in touch with PAS and we will talk it through with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST?

GST, Goods and Services Tax, is a 15% tax added to most goods and services sold in New Zealand. Businesses collect it on sales and can claim it back on eligible purchases.

What's the current GST rate in New Zealand?

The standard rate is 15%. A reduced 9% rate applies only to long-term accommodation, stays of 4 or more weeks in hotels, motels and serviced apartments.

When do I need to register for GST?

You must register once your turnover exceeds $60,000 in any 12-month period, or if you expect to exceed it. You can also register voluntarily below that threshold.

Is everything charged GST?

No. Some supplies are zero-rated (like exports) or exempt (like most financial services and residential rent). GST applies at 0% or not at all in those cases.

How is the GST amount actually calculated?

To add GST: total = amount × 1.15. To find GST inside a total: GST = amount × 3/23. For the 9% accommodation rate, use × 1.09 and × 9/109 instead.

Does this calculator file my GST return for me?

No, it only works out figures for quick reference. For filing, most PAS clients use Xero, and our team is on hand if you would like help preparing or reviewing a return.
